Interdependența imaginilor întunericului și luminii în lirica lui K. D. Balmont (The Interdependence Between the Depictions of Darkness and Light in K. D. Balmont’s Poetry), p. 3-15

Abstract. K. D. Balmont described the entire philosophy of the creator through the contrasting concepts which exist between impressionism and symbolism. The present analysis of Balmont’s poetry reveals the antithesis between the images of light and darkness, the opposition serving as the bedrock on which the poet formed his lyrical credo. The entire work discloses the symbols and motifs of light and darkness, their lyrical personification and philosophical interpretation in verses, which are characteristic of Balmont’s different periods of creation, namely impressionism and symbolism.

Problematica familiei în proza Liudmilei Ulițkaia (romanele Cei dintâi și cei de pe urmă și Medeea și copiii ei) (The Concept of Family in Lyudmila Ulitskaya’s Prose (The Novels The Queen of Spades and Medea and Her Children)), p. 24-33

Abstract. The main theme of the current work concentrates on the portrayal of the family in two of Lyudmila’s novels. There are 2 depictions of the family in Lyudmila’s prose: the content family where everyone lives in harmony and the discontented family where people do not understand, nor respect each other. The article compares these types of families and their problems in the novels The Queen of Spades and Medea and Her Children. Ulitskaya presents the family as the base of human life. Families are the backbone which support a person and help them in the bitter moments of disappointment, cheering them up during the more joyful times. Families are similar to a place where a person develops and, leaving, they always return home. Exhausted, covered in wounds, lost, disoriented by the meaning of life, the man always returns to his family.

Keywords: Family; happiness; faith; love.

Imaginea minerului în ficțiunea și memorialistica lui I. D. Sîrbu (The Image of the Miner in I.D. Sîrbu’s Narrative Writings and Memoirs), p. 34-44

Abstract. This article is a case study, focusing on the image of the miner in the narrative writings and memoirs by I. D. Sîrbu, who became a miner himself as a form of punishment for his “rebellion” against the communist regime. Sîrbu justifies the negative aspects of the miners’ craft, judged ab irato and ad absurdum by those unfamiliar with their work, showing how these become part of their destiny. Drawing on I. D. Sîrbu’s literary representation of this profession, the case study examines the way miners are often unfairly stigmatized by people who ignore their everyday existence.

O viziune cosmopolită asupra chestiunii macedonene după 1990 (A Cosmopolitan View on the Macedonian Matter Post-1990), p. 66-73

Abstract. The Macedonian Question is a real entanglement of elements belonging to Balkan history and ethnocultural identity, whose beginnings can be located at the end of the XIX-th century as a struggle between the newly formed Balkan nation states to incorporate the historical territory of Macedonia. A century later, in 1991, the dissolution of Yugoslavia brought about a renewal of the Macedonian Question in a new ethnocultural, political and social context, similar to the one that caused the end of the Yugoslav Federation and the Yugoslav Wars. In this article, we will focus on some of the ethnic and cultural issues that emerged after the separation of FYROM between the Slavic Macedonian majority and the Albanian minority in an attempt to formulate another, non-ethnic perspective on the situation.

Keywords: multiculturalism; cosmopolitanism; ethnocultural approaches.

Despre Cehov, Vișniec și pescărușii eșuați (About Chekhov, Vișniec and the Crashed Seagulls), p. 74-83

Abstract. This article studies the dramatic masterpieces The Seagull by A.P. Chekhov and About the Fragility of Stuffed Seagulls by M. Vişniec, the latter denoting concurrently an absurd meditation and the advancement from Chekhov’s classic plays, popular during The October Revolution. The current analysis proves that not only is Vișniec’s work a simple extension of Chekhov’s plays, but also the paraphrase from within the new temporal coordinate system.

L1 Influence on Swedish Learners’ English: An Analysis of Pronunciation and Spelling Errors, p. 84-97

Abstract. The present paper aims to illustrate frequently attested types of pronunciation and spelling errors by Swedish learners of English, focusing on errors attributable to the influence of Swedish as L1 on English as L2. In connection with this, the paper traces the identified errors to possible Swedish sources. The first part discusses types of pronunciation errors which include retroflex phonetic realizations of English consonants and faulty phonetic realizations of English sounds which do not exist in Swedish such as the voiceless affricate /ʧ/, the voiced affricate /dʒ/, the interdental fricatives /θ/ and /ð/ and the voiced sibilant /z/. The second part, concerned with spelling errors, illustrates incorrect spellings of several English sounds which do not exist in Swedish (the affricates /ʧ/ and /dʒ/, the interdental fricative /θ/ and the voiced approximant /w/), misspellings of sounds which occur in both Swedish and English (the voiceless sibilant /s/ and the voiceless stop /t/) and spelling errors related to double consonants. Given that pronunciation and spelling are strongly connected, some of the identified errors prove how the same L1 influence underlies errors in both areas. Although the interference of Swedish as L1 with English as L2 cannot be prevented, the paper proves that the analysis of errors caused by crosslinguistic influence can lead to observations which are relevant to English learning and can contribute to improved methods of teaching English.

Keywords: English learning; Swedish Learners; Spelling Errors; Pronunciation Errors.

Viziuni utopice în lirica Zinaidei Hippius (Utopian Views in Zinaisa Hippius’ Poetry), p. 98-109

Abstract. Zinaisa Hippius’ poems illustrate a spiritual and religious crisis, which Russia faced at the end of the century. The heroes of her poetry want to change the society by reinterpreting the Christian values, as they rely on the revolutionary mentality and individualism. According to Hippius, Earth is the place where her socio-political beliefs can be found, along with religious models of the ideal order, represented by The Kingdom of God. The current article aims to explore this project of Hippius’, which she portrays as a utopia. To do so, we are going to analyse 3 concepts, tightly bonded to one another, which influence her poetry greatly: the notion of individualism and society, religious rebirth and sexual liberation.

Keywords: Binary abolishment; primordial androgyne; rebirth of the soul; nonconformist; symbolism.
